With over 300 years of winemaking history, it is often described as bridging the gap between Old World styles and New. The majority of wines are made using New World winemaking techniques but often have more in common stylistically with their Old World counterparts.
Today South Africa is the ninth-largest producer of wine in the world, with some 250,000 acres under vine. Currently, there are more than 250,000 people employed in the industry and South Africa has enjoyed the international attention & acclaim for its wide variety of styles.
South Africa has a wide range of both red and white grape varieties. Most are traditional vinifera grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chenin Blanc and Riesling. The country is also known for the two varieties that originated in South Africa, which is the Cape Riesling and Pinotage. In the late 1980’s South Africa has newer plantings of Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.
